Mumbai: In a significant move aimed at ensuring the safety and security of tourists visiting Powai Lake and its surroundings, the Mumbai Municipal Corporation has announced plans to install Closed-Circuit Television (CCTV) cameras in the Powai Lake Nature Park area. The decision seeks to create a safe and undisturbed environment for the numerous visitors attracted to this popular tourist destination.
Powai Lake, located on Jogeshwari Vikhroli Link Road (JVLR), has emerged as a tourist hotspot, witnessing significant foot traffic, especially during holidays. Recognizing its importance, the municipal corporation has made substantial investments in the area's development, including the beautification of Powai Lake with ornamental trees, attractive walls, and comfortable seating arrangements. As part of the broader Mumbai beautification project, initiatives such as tree planting, footpath repairs, and improved lighting in the lake area have been undertaken by the corporation.
With prominent institutions like IIT Mumbai and a sizable residential population nearby, authorities anticipate safety challenges for both tourists and residents. To address these concerns, the Mumbai Municipal Corporation has allocated a budget of two crore rupees for the installation of CCTV cameras.
Tourists have welcomed this decision and have offered valuable suggestions for further improvement. A Kanjurmarg resident raised concerns about child safety along the lake, stressing the need for enhanced protective measures such as safe barricades. Additionally, inadequate lighting in certain areas of the walkway prompted requests for improved provisions.
In response to affordability concerns, particularly in the affluent Powai area, a Vikhroli resident proposed the establishment of a licensed food court under the municipality's Food on Wheels scheme. This initiative aims to make quality food accessible to all visitors at reasonable prices.
