Truckers' Strike Causes Fuel Shortages and Long Queues at Petrol Pumps: Protest Against New Law Continues

The nationwide strike initiated by the All India Motor Transport Congress to express dissatisfaction with provisions in the recently enacted Bharatiya Nyay Sanhita (BNS) has entered its second day, resulting in significant disruptions in fuel supplies and leading to extensive queues at petrol pumps in various cities. The BNS, which replaces the colonial-era Indian Penal Code, introduces stringent penalties for hit-and-run cases, specifically targeting motorists involved in serious road accidents who flee the scene without reporting it. According to the new law, individuals responsible for such incidents may face up to 10 years of imprisonment and a hefty fine of 7 lakh.

In response to the ongoing protest, the Maharashtra government has urged the police to ensure the uninterrupted supply of petrol, diesel, and LPG cylinders to mitigate potential shortages. The strike has notably impacted the dispatch of LPG cylinders to the market, with packed lorry drivers participating in the strike and refraining from reporting to the plant, causing hindrances in the distribution process.

This disruption extends beyond LPG, affecting other vital petroleum products such as petrol, diesel, and kerosene, as outlined in the communication from the Maharashtra Food, Civil Supply, and Consumer Protection Department. The state government is actively working to address the situation and maintain the smooth flow of essential commodities despite the ongoing strike.
